Early Drawing

“The images in my paintings have come about as a result of my love of drawing. In its wide sense drawing is a search for expressive structures, whatever medium one uses. Line acts as both line and surface such as the markings on crystals, the layering in metamorphic rocks, map making or the American Indian basket weave patterns. For me drawing is the skeleton, the bones of the painting’s structure. The special relevance of drawing to my painting has to do with the smallness of the individual marks of colour which I make. They are comparable to marks made by a pencil point. Drawing is concerned with getting from one place on the canvas to another, and place is being defined precisely in terms of these points of colour.”
